The term Reiki comes from two Japanese words: “rei,” which means universal, and “ki,” which translates to a flow of a lifeforce of energy that is present in all living things.

Reiki is a healing technique based on the principle that the practitioner can channel energy into the client by means of touch to activate the natural healing processes of the client's body and restore physical and emotional well-being. Dating back to early 20th-century Japan, Reiki is rooted in Buddhist and eastern traditions.

What happens during a Reiki session?

During a Reiki therapy session, the client lies on a massage table, fully dressed, while a practitioner places their palms on or just over different zones for energy on your body. The practitioner decides how long to leave their palms in each spot based on the flow of energy that they perceive through their hands. The client might feel sensations like heat, tingling, or pulsing during the treatment. Some people get so relaxed that they fall asleep.

What should I expect after a Reiki session?

Clients often report feeling more relaxed after a Reiki treatment. However, some clients may experience side effects which may include headaches or mood swings caused by shifts in the body’s energy fields. It is recommended that clients increase water intake to assist the body in the detoxification process, get plenty of rest, eat light meals, and avoid alcohol, smoking, and caffeinated beverages for a few days post treatment.
